    Christopher Parkening Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

    At this year’s La Guitarra California Festival held at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on September 22-24, Christopher Parkening was presented their Lifetime Achievement Award “presented biennially to an acclaimed musician whose accomplishments have greatly increased the world-wide appreciation of classical guitar.”

    Festival Director Russ DeAngelo presented the award on Friday night, followed by a brief concert by Mr. Parkening with baritone Jubilant Sykes.  Mr. DeAngelo commented, “We are supremely honored to etch the name of Maestro Christopher Parkening into the La Guitarra Lifetime Achievement Award in perpetuity.”

    On Saturday morning of the Festival, Mr. Parkening gave an informative master class to an appreciative sold-out audience.  Four classical guitar students played their pieces, and were given practical ideas on how to improve their technique.

    La Guitarra California Dedicates Festival to Christopher Parkening

    This weekend, September 22-24, 2017, La Guitarra California Festival will be held on the Cal. Poly San Luis Obispo campus.  As part of Friday night’s festivities, Christopher Parkening will receive the La Guitarra Lifetime Achievement Award “presented biennially to an acclaimed musician whose accomplishments have greatly increased the world-wide appreciation of classical guitar.”

    Following this presentation ceremony, Mr. Parkening and baritone Jubilant Sykes will perform a brief concert in the Cohan Center at Cal. Poly SLO.

    Saturday morning from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. Christopher Parkening will lead a master class featuring several local guitarists.  The class will be held at Philips Hall,.

    Guitar Chamber Concert Performance, April 18, 7:30 p.m.

    Tonight, April 18 at 7:30 p.m. the guitar students of Christopher Parkening will present a Guitar Chamber Concert featuring the music of composers Schubert, Bellinati, York, Piazzolla, and others. One highlight of this recital will be graduating seniors Sergio Gallardo and Cody Noriega performing the energetic “La Vida Breve” by Manuel de Falla.
     
    Held at the Raitt Recital Hall on the Pepperdine University campus in Malibu, California, this concert is free and open to the public.

    Pepperdine Classical Guitarists Prepare for Senior Recitals

    Music majors Cody Noriega and Sergio Gallardo will give two recitals in preparation for their upcoming senior recitals.

    The first concert will be held on Tuesday, April 4 from 5:00-6:00 p.m. in Raitt Recital Hall on the Pepperdine Malibu campus.  Included in this recital will be pieces by Bach, Debussy, Barrios, Tedesco, and others.

    Then on Friday, April 7 from 3:00-4:00 p.m. Sergio and Cody will perform in concert at the Malibu Public Library, 23519 Civic Center Way in Malibu.

    Both Cody and Sergio are classical guitar students of Pepperdine’s Distinguished Professor of Music Christopher Parkening.

    Pepperdine Student Guitar Concert Series

    The Pepperdine University Guitar Department will present a concert featuring current students studying with Distinguished Professor of Music Christopher Parkening.  Held from 5:00-6:00 p.m. tomorrow, March 14 in Raitt Recital Hall on the Pepperdine Malibu Campus, this concert will feature guitarists Joseph Peliska, Hope Mueller, Jonathan Pryde & Joseph Hertz performing masterpieces from the classical guitar literature spanning six centuries and including composers from around the world.  All concerts are free and open to the general public.

    Parkening Holds Master Class February 4

    This Saturday, February 4, Christopher Parkening will present a public Master Class from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. in Raitt Recital Hall on the Pepperdine University campus in Malibu, California.

    Prof. Parkening will coach his classical guitar students, as well as outside performing players.

    Guest Artist Jubilant Sykes will work with vocal students, accompanied by Mr. Parkening’s students.

    There is no charge to audit this class, and no reservations are needed.  For more information see the master class web site.

     

    Pepperdine Students Featured in Malibu Publications

    Undergraduate students  of Distinguished Professor of Music Christopher Parkening were featured in three Malibu publications this week with stories about their recent performances in Raitt Recital Hall and at the Malibu Public Library.

    Tired of Election News?

    PeCome and hear a performance of Distinguished Professor of Music Christopher Parkening’s classical guitar students tomorrow, November 8, from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. in Raitt Recital Hall on the Pepperdine Malibu campus.

    This recital will feature works by Barrios, Rodrigo, Albeniz, Dyans, Granados, and De Falla, among others.

    The concert is free and open to the public.

     

    Student Guitar Recital at Malibu Public Library

    The Pepperdine University Guitar Department presents a concert featuring current students studying with world-renowned virtuoso and Distinguished Professor of Music Christopher Parkening. This recital will be held this Friday, September 16 from 3:00-4:00 p.m. at the Malibu Public Library, 23519 W. Civic Center Way, Malibu, CA 90265, and will feature repertoire from the classical guitar literature spanning multiple centuries and include composers such as Villa-Lobos, York, Sor and Tárrega, among others. All concerts are free and open to the general public.
